Start Ich bin seit meiner Kindheit ein kreativer Mensch und dank der Unterstützung meiner Familie habe ich meine Liebe zur Kunst und Kreativität nie aufgegeben und mein Studium an der Falmouth University in Cornwall 2020 mit einem Bachelor in Illustration abgeschlossen. Seitdem bin ich als freiberufliche Illustratorin tätig und habe das Vergnügen, mit vielen wunderbaren Kunden an einer Reihe von Projekten zu arbeiten, vor allem an illustrierten Kinderbüchern und Buchumschlägen.
Stil Ich kann gar nicht genau sagen, was ich als meinen »Stil« beschreiben sollte und wehre mich auch immer etwas dagegen, in irgendeine eine Schublade gesteckt zu werden. Da Landschaften und Geschichten über das Land eine große Inspiration für meinen kreativen Prozess sind, könnte man »Geschichtenerzählen« oder »Geschichten vom Land« vielleicht als eine Art »Stil« betrachten?
Lieblingsmotive Da ich sehr von der Natur selbst inspiriert bin, dominieren Erdtöne meine Farbpalette. Außerdem mag ich es, winzige Details in meine Bilder einzubauen, die der Betrachter entdecken kann. Oft sind das kleine Figuren oder alte Steine und winzige Ausschnitte aus Mustern, um bei den Betrachter:innen das Gefühl zu erzeugen, dass sie von dem, was sie sehen, umhüllt sind und dass sie klein sind und sanft darin gehalten werden.
Technik Für meine Auftragsarbeiten und den Großteil meines Portfolios arbeite ich digital und nutze Procreate. Das ist bei Aufträgen mit engen Terminvorgaben oder vielen Änderungen äußerst hilfreich, da es so viel weniger zeit braucht, alle erforderlichen Änderungen vornehmen als, wenn ich alles von Hand gemalt hätte. In meinen Bildern schichte ich viele Texturen und Details übereinander, um ein Gefühl von Tiefe und Komplexität zu erzeugen. Das ist die Grundlage aller meiner Illustrationen. Danach füge ich spezifischere Details mit unterschiedlicher Deckkraft hinzu, um ein Gefühl von Zeitlosigkeit und Vergänglichkeit zu erzeugen. Ich habe auch immer ein persönliches Skizzenbuch dabei, das ich auf Spaziergängen oder wo auch immer ich an diesem Tag hingehe, mitnehme, und manchmal werden einige dieser Skizzen zu einer kolorierten Arbeit. Wenn ich zwischen den Projekten Zeit habe, beschäftige ich mich neben dem Malen auch gerne mit Linolschnitten und Drucken.
Inspiration Meine Arbeit ist von der Natur inspiriert, von Ökologie, Folklore und Anthropologie. Die Leidenschaft für das Geschichtenerzählen und die Achtung und der Schutz der Natur ist ein ständiger Antrieb meiner Arbeit und meines kreativen Prozesses.

Mysterious Lands
High amongst the waterfalls, tumbling stones and clinging trees, beings from other lands walk on
the air and spray of water. – Bild: Elin Manon
One of my favourite features in the Cornish landscape is the stone style, set into the hedgerows.
Cornish hedging itself is a method which has been used for around 4,000 years and covering over
30,000 miles of Cornwall with some still standing from the Bronze and Iron ages. They provide
vital habitats and wildlife corridors, providing shelter and sustenance and also acting as seed

Bird of Palestine
A cry of pain and mourning for all those murdered in the genocide of the Palestinian people in
Gaza, dwelling on the poem by the Palestinian poet Mosab Abutoha -
‘You were so small in my hands
No shrapnel could hit you,
But the dust and smoke of the bomb
Rushed into your lungs.
No need for any gauze.

Rising Through the Mists
When wandering the hills and climbing mountains, catching site of these cairns, laid by careful
hands stone by stone, is always a reassuring site that you’re going in the right direction, especially

The Storytellers
For hundreds and thousands of years, across continents, cultures, traditions and beliefs, we as a
species have been storytellers. These stories have taught us the basics of how to survive, the
dangers and joys of living in a shifting world. They have connected us to one another, to place,
and served to distinguish and celebrate our differences and similarities. Most importantly, the
roots of these stories hold a deep connection with the land, teaching us how to respect and live
symbiotically within it, intrinsically linked as we are.
Now more than ever, it is crucial that we are able to re-establish and hold on to this connection, in
order to celebrate, fight and protect and care for these habitats and landscape in which these
stories are rooted, and all those who call them home. – Bild: Elin Manon

West Kennet Long Barrow
West Kennet Long Barrow is an impressive five chambered Neolithic long barrow located off the
A4 in Wiltshire, UK, a stone’s through from another two well known ancient sites - Sillbury Hill and
Avebury henge and stone circle. My parents and I would often stop here when I was a child on the
way to or from seeing my grandmother - hot sunny days walking up through the field from the car,
unpacking our picnic at the top of the barrow and taking in the magic of this ancient place. – Bild: Elin Manon

Woven Through Time
An illustration which featured in the magazine ‘Under The Ancient Yew’, a publication which
explores the relationship between anthropology, folklore, ecology, and the land. This piece
explores the transience of time and place, and our connection to worlds gone before. – Bild: Elin Manon
Start I’ve been a creative individual since I was a child, and with the encouragement of family I pursued my love and study of art and creativity on through to university, where I graduated from Falmouth University (Cornwall, UK) with a BA in Illustration in 2020. Since then I have made a career from being a freelance illustrator, and have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful clients on a range of projects, predominantly working on illustrated children’s books and book covers.
Style I don’t really know exactly what to label my ‘style’ as, and I’ve always been a little resistant at trying to put it into any sort of box. I guess as landscape and stories of the land are big inspirations behind my creative process, perhaps ‘storytelling’ or ‘land stories’ could be considered a kind of ‘style’?
Favourite motifs As I’m heavily inspired by the natural environment, earth colours and tones are the predominant colour palette which can be seen throughout my work. I enjoy including smaller details in my imagery for the viewer to find, often small figures or ancient standing stones and tiny details of pattern, to create a sense that the viewer is enveloped within what they see before them, and that they are small and held gently within it.
Technique For my commission work and majority of my portfolio I work digitally using the software Procreate. This has been hugely helpful when working on commissions with tight deadlines or many amendments, as it allows me to make any changes needed in a shorter space of time than if I were to paint everything by hand. To create my images I layer up many textures and details, to create a sense of depth and complexity. This creates the base for all of my illustrations, after which I then begin to add more specific details at varying opacities in an effort to evoke a sense of timelessness and transience. I do also carry a personal sketchbook with me which I will take on walks or wherever I may be going that day, and sometimes some of those sketches make their way into becoming a final colourised piece. I do also enjoy carving and printing with lino, as well as painting, when I have the time between projects.
Inspiration My work is inspired by the natural world, ecology, folklore and anthropology. A passion for storytelling and the celebration and protection of ournatural world has been a constant drive within my work and creative process.
