Kostenlose Bilder aus dem Internet Archive

Und über 14 Millionen sollen es noch werden!

Seit 1996 eifert das Internet Archive, eine Non-Profit-Organisation aus San Francisco, der Bibliothek von Alexandria nach und will das Wissen der Menschheit sammeln – nur mit dem kleinen Unterschied, dass dieses dann auch online kostenlos allen zur Verfügung stehen soll. Neben massenweise Video- und Audio-Dateien gibt es auf archive.org auch Scans von zwei Millionen Büchern aus den letzten 500 Jahren. Daraus wurden nun 14 Millionen Public-Domain-Bilder extrahiert, die nach und nach in die Flickr-Commons-Kollektion Internet Archive Book Images eingespeist werden.

Die Bilder haben teilweise zwar nicht die Qualität, die man bei einer kommerziellen Bildagentur finden würde. Für Collagen oder sonstige kreative Weiterverarbeitung taugen sie allemal.

Wir haben ein paar Leckerbissen herausgesucht, etwa aus botanischen Büchern, Versandkatalogen oder Magazinen wie dem »Ladies Journal« (die bei der Quellenangabe zu findende Jahreszahl 1889 bezieht nicht auf die einzelnen Bilder!).

Dabei haben wir die Embedding-Funktion von Flickr genutzt. Der Klick auf die Bilder führt also direkt zum Original bei Flickr – und lädt zum Download oder zum weiterem Stöbern in der Kollektion ein.
