Andrea Tinnes

Designer

Andrea Tinnes is a type designer, typographer and educator based in Berlin. Her hybrid design practice is characterized by the intersection of visual research, language, investigative form-making and experimental printing, such as her currently ongoing project “Library of Shapes, Texts and Structures”. Andrea has been teaching since 2007 as a professor of Type and Typography at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle. In her teaching, she addresses both sociopolitical and cultural issues and encourages students to learn how typography and type can be effective tools and make their contributions in these contexts. For the last couple of years Andrea has been working on a series of typefaces — Allgemein Grotesk, Vielfalt, LOS (Library of Shapes) and Retroskop — constantly revising and adding new features so that they remain permanently in their beta state.
